What is Dyslipidemia?
Dyslipidemias are responsible for producing elevations in the blood levels of cholesterol and triglyceride. The most important of these conditions are those resulting in elevation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or the "bad cholesterol". It is the LDL cholesterol disorders that markedly increase the risk of coronary heart disease.
It is important to know your cholesterol levels and to achieve your cholesterol goals. Your cholesterol goals are determined by your risk factors. In August 2004 the National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines were updated with optional LDL goals for our highest risk individuals (patients with coronary heart disease and diabetes, patients with multiple risk factors).

How do I control my cholesterol levels?
A healthy diet, regular exercise program, and weight control are part of controlling your cholesterol levels. But, most often cholesterol lowering medications are necessary to achieve your cholesterol goals. Our team at the Heart & Vascular Institute of Florida works aggressively at controlling this risk factor. We can help you achieve your goals and reduce your risk of coronary heart disease.
