What is an Intravascular Ultrasound (IVUS)?

This is a test that is performed during a cardiac or peripheral catheterization procedure when additional information is necessary. It uses a miniaturized ultrasound transducer placed at the level of the blocked artery. It gives information regarding the exact severity of obstruction and the composition of the blockage, assisting the cardiologist in determining the best treatment of the blockage. It also allows a better assessment of the results after an angioplasty or stent procedure.
