Microvolt T-Wave Alternans Studies

Micorvolt T-Wave Alternans testing is a non-invasive procedure used to help a doctor identify patients who are at high and low risk for sudden cardiac death.  This test allows a doctor to measure and evaluate the alternations of the T-waves at a millionth of a volt level that are not normally visible on a standard EKG.  Simply, T-waves tests can help identify patients who are at a higher risk for sudden cardiac death.

The doctor usually orders this test when he or she suspects a patient is at risk of a life-threatening cardiac episode.  This test is preformed similar to a stress test.  Electrodes will be placed in specific locations on the trunk of the body.  The electrodes are hooked up to leads that are connected to the Microvolt T-Wave Alternans machine.  The patient will be instructed to walk on a treadmill to raise their heart rate.

Information will be recorded while the patient is at rest, walking on the treadmill and at rest again.  If the patient is unable to walk on a treadmill the doctor may use certain drugs to increase the heart rate to complete the test.

The doctor will evaluate the test results and confirm to the patient if he or she is at high or low risk.
